Ok - great idea, liking this in priciple... Basically - I'm experimenting with a number of CMS's around, i'm well versed with wordpress, drupal and others - The last week i have been playing with TextPattern and it's warming on me. This mod sounds like a great fix for the one area i was finding a little painful...

My question is - can you give us a step by step guide on converting a theme to this format... there are some great themes on http://textplates.com/ and they all seem to follow a uniform approach - the install is lengthy in most cases however I would apreciate some pointers in convering skins to this format...

    Thanks in advance

Actually there is no special thing about converting WordPress themes. I’m also using the same plugin, that is used for importing the templates, for exporting all the pages, forms and styles to a folder, zip it and offer it on the website.

I don’t know if understand your question right, so if there are still questions, don’t hesitate to ask them here.

My question was about converting textpattern templates which such as those on textplates into the structure required by your import routine.

I see that you need to first create the theme following provided the instructions (usually involving taking text files and updating/creating pages within the admin interface...), once created I can then export...

In that creating a theme the old way in textpattern is a little slow, i think i am right in saying to correct file extensions, paths and re-structure the folder structures to match what your plugin would expect is quite likely to take longer than creating the traditional way. However as far as I can see this plugin is invaluable from the point of view of archiving, versioning and developing a design to new heights in a structured way...

My apologies for being vague with my initial post - i am a noob when it comes to textpattern - as i said i've been trialing a number of cms's and i am trying to identify their strengths/weaknesses as any developer choosing the right product to develop and work with and being able to see its limitations is key...

The ability of Textpattern to develop, export and import templates/themes easily is unfortunately, well, underdeveloped, compared to systems like WordPress. The plugin I'm using (I'm not the developer of this plugin, btw) and which is required to import the templates I'm publishing here is only a tool for easy import, but not for development.

As you said, it's not recommended to convert exisiting templates for TXP to the format used by this plugin, because you would be faster if you copy and paste the data like instructed by the developers. However, it would be nice if the developers of those templates would convert there templates to a format that is easy to import. But that's their business, not mine.

Maybe you should take a look at TxP IDE. Bert is using a simliar approach with another plugin, but targeting to make development of templates easier.
